MESOTHELIOMA

Mesothelioma is an aggressive and deadly form of cancer that attacks the mesothelium, or the lining of the lungs, as well as the heart, abdomen and testes. It is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a dangerous substance that was primarily used as insulation.  Airborne asbestos fibers are either inhaled or swallowed. Fibers become lodged in the mesothelium.  From there, the embedded fibers damage the mesothelial cells, and cause inflammation. Over time, tumors can begin to form on the damaged mesothelium.

Some tumors are benign and noncancerous, and sometimes referred to as “benign mesothelioma” or “solitary fibrous tumor”. Other tumors are cancerous. These referred to by doctors as “malignant mesothelioma”, or shortened to mesothelioma. There have been four main types of mesothelioma identified. Mesothelioma can produce a wide variety of symptoms, depending on where the cancer occurs.  Mesothelioma symptoms can take up to 50 years to emerge after exposure to asbestos.
